OVERVIEW

I completed a 13-month internship at Sheffield Hallam University as part of two seperate Communication and Engagement teams. I worked under my line manger, a Communication and Engagement Lead, at Health and Wellbeing (HWB) Professional Placements Team & my supervisor, a Communication and Engagement Officer, at Advance Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC).

As a intern at AWRC, whose initiative is making innovations that help people move more, I led projects where i designed comprehesive media for staff and the wider public, including developing a series of signposting for their technical labs (TORS), video editing for Innovation Futures (R&D), and an animation for the Active Wait project (STH). I also contributed to volunteering for the This Girl Can event to encourage non-engaging young girls to participate more in physcial activity.

Simutaneously, at HWLS, I assisted with streamlinging processes through producing visual communications, including a handful of informative designs on the team’s processes for both staff and students, designed a proof-of-concept website for ease of access for the users, and led sessions teaching members of my team how to use certain software. I also contributed to being crucial team player and took on additional administrative workload outside my role.

During the internship, I developed skills in project management, copywriting and editing, and inclusive engagement, which are directly applicable to my career in as a designer looking to expand my horizon in education.

One of my key achievements was producing a comprehensive collection of signposts for the technical labs. I initiated the project by discussing the brief with the senior TORS technician, collaborating on the overall concept and revisions. The result was a future-proof series of signposts that received praise from the TORS line manager and are being considered for university-wide implementation within the TORS department.

This internship enhanced my understanding of communication between staff, students, and third parties, while reinforcing my passion for accessible design. I learned valuable lessons in identifying key communication skills, engaging the right stakeholders, and conducting market research, all of which have shaped my career direction.
